Performing a kidney biopsy

Pre-procedure preparation:

• You may be asked to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, before the procedure. You will likely need to fast for a few hours before the biopsy.

Informed consent:

• Your healthcare provider, Dr. D. Mukherjee will explain the procedure, its risks, benefits, and alternatives.
• You will need to provide informed consent before the procedure.

Anesthesia:

• Kidney biopsies are typically performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the area where the biopsy needle will be inserted.
• In some cases, conscious sedation or general anesthesia may be used, depending on the patient’s condition and the healthcare provider’s preference.

Procedure:

• You will be positioned on your stomach or side on an examination table.
• The healthcare provider will clean the biopsy site and may use ultrasound or CT scan guidance to locate the kidney.
• A small incision is made in the skin, and a biopsy needle is inserted through the incision into the kidney.
• Tissue samples are obtained by either a fine needle aspiration or a core biopsy needle.
• The needle is quickly withdrawn, and pressure is applied to the biopsy site to minimize bleeding.
• A bandage or dressing is applied to the incision site.

Post-procedure care:

• After the biopsy, you will be monitored for several hours to ensure there are no complications.
• Bed rest may be advised for a few hours, followed by a limited activity for the next 24-48 hours.
• Pain medication may be prescribed if necessary.
• You may be instructed to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for a certain period.
• Follow any additional instructions provided by your healthcare provider, such as medication schedules or dietary restrictions.

Potential risks and complications:

• Kidney biopsy is generally considered safe, but there are potential risks, including bleeding, infection, damage to surrounding structures, and pain.
• Your healthcare provider will discuss these risks with you before the procedure.
